The Somali National Army (SNA) troops on Friday captured Goofgaduud village in the Southern Somali region of Baay from Al-Shabaab Fighters.

Somali army commander in Baay, Ibraahim Yarow said the forces captured the area after the troop defeated Al-Shabaab fighters who have been controlling the town for months

“SNA captured Goofgaduud location in Baay region Friday morning. We were responding to complaints from locals here but the terrorists escaped when we advanced to the area,” Yarow said.

The latest military development comes as lower house elections were concluded in Baidoa town, the administrative capital of Southwest State.

Somalia’s government is battling to rebuild the Horn of Africa nation after more than two decades of conflict.

Al-Shabaab has been driven out of major towns to rural areas in southern and central Somalia, but still carries out frequent attacks in the country.
